Why medical care is important

Go within 72 hours where possible.

HIV Prevention (PEP)

Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) can reduce the risk of HIV infection. It should be started within 72 hours. The earlier, the better.

Emergency Contraception

Emergency contraception can reduce the risk of pregnancy if taken within 72 to 120 hours.

Injury Treatment

Some injuries are internal and may not be obvious. A medical professional can check and treat you.

Forensic Examination

Medical staff may collect evidence if you choose to report. This is your decision.

Primary Healthcare Centres

Many Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in Nigeria can provide initial care for sexual assault survivors. Services may include medical examination, documentation of injuries, STI treatment, emergency contraception, and referral for forensic evidence collection where available. Availability of rape kits and forensic services may vary by location. You can visit a PHC even if you do not want to report immediately.

Even if you have bathed or changed clothes, you can still seek medical help.
